Notes and comments:

2) I am now taking volunteers for the May and June events (Run for the Zoo, Santa Fe Century, and Albuquerque Century). More help needed for all three events.

May 4, 2008 – Run for the Zoo. This large (thousands of participants – serious runners, families, and kids) run/walk event has been supported by Albuquerque area radio amateurs for many years. There will be competitive (timed) 10K and 5K races, a 5K fun run/walk, and a one-mile fun run/walk, all occurring around the zoo, Tingley Beach, and the old Albuquerque Country Club area. We will need handheld or portable/mobile stations to operate from fixed locations along the course, and possibly a bicycle mobile or two. Fred Ream, N5CJC, will coordinate the event. I will pass along the names of volunteers to Fred.
May 18, 2008 – Santa Fe Century Bike Ride. This is a 100-mile bike ride that begins in Santa Fe, heads south through Madrid, Golden, and Cedar Grove, then goes east to Stanley, north through Galisteo, and back to the starting point. There are shorter rides included in the route. See www.santafecentury.com. We have assisted with this event for a number of years. It is a large scale event that puts thousands of riders on the road. We need portable or mobile stations to be positioned at the start/finish area and at rest stops and mobile stations to cruise the course and keep an eye on the riders. Fuel expense will be reimbursed by the event organizers.
June 7, 2008 – Albuquerque Century Bike Ride. After a successful inaugural operation last year, the organizers have asked us to support this event again. This is a 100-mile bike tour that will start and end at the Heart Hospital near downtown and will follow a wide loop around the city. There will be shorter routes included in the ride. This list entry will be updated as further details become available. See www.abqcentury.com (currently being updated). We will need portable or mobile stations to be positioned at rest stops and mobile stations to cruise the course and keep an eye on the riders.
August 3, 2008 – La Luz Trail Race. This event is being coordinated by Jay Miller, WA5WHN, and Rees Bevan, WB5DEJ. Amateurs provide communications support for this annual race up La Luz Trail from positions in the starting area, at the finish, and from points along the course. I am told that there are enough volunteers to cover this year’s event, but Jay and Rees are looking for two additional volunteers with 2-meter handhelds who are able to hike the trail, to serve as backup communications people should there be a need to supplement or replace the current personnel. Contact Jay (wa5whn@arrl.net) and Rees (rees@dataterminal.com).
August 23-24, 2008 – MS 150 Bike Tour. Two days, Bernalillo to Los Alamos and return, as far as I know. More information to follow.
August 31, 2008 – New Mexico Marathon. To be coordinated by Dick Powell, AD5CS. More information to follow.
October 19, 2008 – Duke City Marathon. This will be the 25th anniversary of this event, which has been supported by hams almost from the outset. More information to follow.
